How does Zegluxen® work?
Zegluxen® , or the active ingredient liraglutide, is a medicine known as a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP1-RA), for use in people with Type 2 diabetes.1 Zegluxen® is supplied as a clear and colourless or almost colourless solution.2
It is very similar to a natural hormone called GLP-1 which is released into the body after eating.3
Zegluxen® helps your body reduce your blood sugar level, but only when your blood sugar is too high. It also slows food passage through your stomach and can help prevent heart disease.2
Please note: Zegluxen® is not a form of insulin and should not be used as a substitute for insulin.2
There are two different ways that Zegluxen® may be used to help control your diabetes:
Using Zegluxen® alone
If your blood sugar is not properly controlled by diet and exercise alone, and you can’t take metformin (another diabetes medicine), your doctor might prescribe Zegluxen® to help manage your blood sugar levels1,2
Using Zegluxen® with other medications
If your current diabetes medicines (such as metformin, pioglitazone, sulfonylurea, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and/or insulin) aren’t enough to control your blood sugar levels, your doctor might add Zegluxen® to your existing treatment plan1,2
Who can take Zegluxen®?
Zegluxen® can be used to treat Type 2 diabetes in adults, adolescents and children aged 10 years or older.2
